Methodology
Every number on this site is computed by a program, not copied from another chart, and every table is checked by a second, independent method before it is published. If the two disagree, the site is not rebuilt.
Instrument one: count everything
Poker questions are small enough to answer by dealing every possibility:
- All 1,326 starting hands, for how often each kind of hand is dealt.
- All 19,600 flops for a given hand, and all 2,118,760 five-card boards, for what the board gives it.
- Every turn and river after the flop, for the chance of hitting 1 to 21 outs and for a set improving.
- All 2,598,960 five-card hands and all 133,784,560 seven-card hands, for hand probabilities.
- All 1,712,304 boards for each all-in matchup.
Instrument two: check it another way
- Where a closed-form formula exists, such as the chance of a pocket pair or of hitting one of 9 outs, the formula and the count must agree exactly.
- The fast program that sorts seven-card hands is checked hand by hand against a separate, slower evaluator on 300,000 random hands.
- Each matchup is also dealt 60,000 times at random; the simulated result must lie within five standard errors of the exact one.
The browser tools
The equity calculator uses the same card numbering and the same rules, deals every remaining board and gives the same results as our tables. The pot odds calculator uses the exact chance of hitting, not the rule of 2 and 4.
Assumptions
- A standard 52-card deck, shuffled fairly. Cards you cannot see, including other players' cards and burned cards, count as unknown.
- Outs are counted as clean: an out is assumed to give you the best hand.
- Equity counts a split pot as half a win.
